Tigers get papers from Spencer
LSU received the papers from Glen Oaks High guard Bo Spencer on Friday.
Spencer, a two-time Class 5A honorable mention selection and member of The Advocate’s All-Metro team, is expected to give the Tigers a boost in the backcourt after the school landed four big guys in the fall.
“Bo Spencer is going to answer some of the questions we have at point guard,” LSU coach John Brady said in a statement released by the school. “He comes to us from a winning high school program at Glen Oaks. Harvey Adger has done an excellent job of coaching and preparing him to play at this level.
“He comes from a wonderful family and he is another local player coming to our program that we expect to have a good career at LSU.”
Oklahoma and Virginia had also been courting Spencer, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds.
Spencer averaged 22 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for GOHS and was named the Most Valuable Player of the last month’s Louisiana High School Coaches Association all-star game after scoring 25 points.
He totaled 1,159 points in two seasons with the Panthers after transferring from Southern Lab.
LSU signed four players in November: 6-10 forward Garrett Green from Woodland Hills, Calif.; 6-10 forward Anthony Randolph of Woodrow Wilson High in Dallas; 6-9 power forward Quintin Thornton from Odessa College; and 6-7 small forward D.J. Wright from Toronto.
Randolph, a Parade All-American, averaged 25.8 ppg and 12.6 rpg as a senior.
Getting interior players was a must, considering LSU lost junior Glen Davis, who turned pro last month, and senior Darnell Lazare.
LSU is still awaiting the paperwork from Marcus Thornton, who committed to the Tigers last month. (The signing period began Wednesday.)
Thornton, a 6-4 guard who averaged 26.6 ppg and had 79 assists and four steals for Kilgore College, finished at Tara High in 2005. As Spencer can give the Tigers some floor leadership, Thornton could give LSU an outside scoring threat the Tigers lacked last season.
The Thorntons are not related.
