YEAR IN REVIEW: 10 Games to Forget

With the start of football season less than a week away, we will officially close the books on the 2006-07 athletic season at LSU. Throughout the end of the week, we will recap the past 12 months in LSU sports. Here, we look at the 10 Games to Forget from 2006-07.

10 GAMES TO FORGET

1. Auburn 7, LSU 3 – Saturday, Sept. 16, 2007

For the second straight trip to the Plains, LSU gets hosed by the officials when a pass interference penalty gets waved off in the final minutes. LSU still gets a shot at the win, by JaMarcus Russell’s pass to Craig Davis comes up four yards short in the most memorable defensive battle in recent years.

2. Washington 88, LSU 72 – Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006

It was a sign of things to come. LSU’s Glen Davis got exposed by U-Dub freshman Spencer Hawes as the Huskies embarrass the Tigers by 16 points – 88-72 – on ESPN.

3. Florida 23, LSU 10 – Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006

The eventual national Gators did just enough that day to top the mistake-prone LSU 23-10. Two critical fumbles and a muffed punt doomed the Tigers as LSU watched its hopes of a national title fade away.

4. Rutgers 59, LSU 35 – Sunday, April 1, 2007

In eight trips to the Final Four by LSU basketball teams (men and women); the Tigers/Lady Tigers are a combined 0-8. The last loss, a Lady Tigers defeat to Rutgers, ended a magical run for Bob Starkey and the LSU women.

5. Kentucky 16, LSU 2 – Friday, March 23, 2007

After earlier blowout losses to Stetson, LSU fans were aware that the Paul Mainieri era at LSU would take some time. Defending SEC champion Kentucky made it hurt though.

6. Florida 19, LSU 3 – Friday, May 11, 2007

At least they were consistent. Tigers closed out SEC play much the way it began as Florida bombed Mainieri’s club by 16, the worst loss of the season.

7. LSU 23, Ole Miss 20 – Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006

Yes the Tigers won, but by the skin of their teeth. JaMarcus Russell capped off his eighth last minute comeback rallying the Tigers from a 20-7 deficit. But LSU shouldn’t have needed overtime to beat this bad Ole Miss team.

8. Ole Miss 71, LSU 70 – Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007

There were a lot of painful losses for John Brady’s Tigers in 2006-07, but none hurt worse than the Rebels’ last-second buzzer beater over a beleaguered Tiger team.

9. Georgia 1, LSU 0 (9) – Sunday, May 6, 2007

A week earlier LSU beat No. 1 Tennessee in the most memorable home game in LSU Softball history. A week later, a 1-0 loss to Georgia cost the Tigers the SEC title.

10. Vanderbilt 51, LSU 45 – Sunday, March 4, 2007

In Pokey Chatman’s last game as head coach, the Lady Tigers lost the SEC Tournament championship to Vanderbilt, a day after LSU had beaten eventual national champion Tennessee.
